VAUX CHESS TEAM CAPTURES SUPER NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP
IN KNOXVILLE TENNESSEE ON APRIL 27, 1997

The Roberts Vaux Middle School Chess Team traveled to Tennessee on Wednesday, April 23, 1997 with one goal; to bring home a Super National Championship trophy. On Tuesday, April 29, they did just that!!

The eight-time national champions (seven consecutive), Mighty Bishops returned to Philadelphia with ten trophies and plaques after winning first place team honors in their K-8 division and individual awards for the third and sixth best players in the nation. The thirteen player team consisting of Demetrius Carroll, Charles Mabine, Earl Jenkins, Anthony Harper, Anwar Smith, Denise Pickard, Latoria Spann, Alisca Shropshire, Tanisha Edwards, Tyeisha Falligan, Donzell White, Thomas Allen, and Ralph Johnson finished with the best record of any middle school while competing among 4300 of the best chess players in the nation at the largest chess tournament ever in our country and possibly the world. The team also received honors for the top sixth and seventh grader, and a coach's award for the head coach Salome Thomas-El and assistant coaches Ishmael Al-Islam and Kevin Jiles (former Vaux chess player).

The team's next major competition will be in March 1998 at the The
Pennsylvania State Championship in Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania. The competition schedule includes The National Junior High Championship in Phoenix, Arizona in April 1998 and The U.S. Open Championship in Kona, Hawaii in August 1998.
